The City of West Sacramento will partner with Rebuilding Together Sacramento to implement a pilot program providing home safety modifications to older, low-moderate income residents at no cost to the resident. This program will help more West Sacramento residents live independently in their homes.

Rebuilding Together Sacramento has a primary mission of “repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives,” with a vision of having, “a safe and healthy home for every person”. Safe at Home West Sacramento would build on this mission and vision by funding home repairs such as grab bars and handrails, threshold ramps, toilet or shower assist units, energy-efficient bulbs, modified steps, and transfer poles, as well as smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detectors. These changes to the home environment are directly related to reduce the risk of falling and improving general safety, accessibility, and functional abilities for the resident.

Who is eligible?

The target market for this program is older (ages 50+) West Sacramento resident homeowners that fall into the low-moderate income category and would benefit from minor safety modifications to improve their ability to stay in their current home as long as possible.

Eligibility Process:

Submit an official application through Rebuilding Together Sacramento
- The brief questionnaire on this site is not in lieu of an application but rather a way for residents to be added to the eligibility list.
Provide one of the following income verification documents for all members of the household who receive an income to Rebuilding Together Sacramento.
- Social Security award letter
- Recent pay stub
- Income tax return
- Recent bank statement

What types of repairs or modifications are available?

The services are provided at no cost to the homeowner and work will be done in partnership with the client and a skilled Installer. The services are person-centered home modifications to remedy home hazards, improve accessibility and prevent injuries or falls. The most common repairs and modifications available will be the low-cost, home modifications such as:

● Grab bars (shower and bathtub)
● Bath or shower mat
● Toilet frame
● Shower stools
● Shower hose
● Toilet seat riser
● Modified steps
●Transfer poles
● Handrails
● CO Detector
● Smoke and fire detectors
● Wheelchair ramps (on a limited basis)

What is not available?

● Bathroom remodel
● Ramp for mobile home
● Wheelchair lift
● Electrical
● Plumbing

What is the application process?

To determine whether the homeowner is eligible, you may do one of two things:

Call the City at (916) 617-4659. City staff will ask a series of questions (as seen in the survey below)
Submit a brief survey online. Based on the questionnaire, staff or Rebuilding Together Sacramento will contact you to determine next steps (if applicable).

If eligibility has been determined by the City's partner Rebuilding Together Sacramento, they will move forward with the application process.

Once you have received eligibility from Rebuilding Together Sacramento, you will need to complete the application and submit to Rebuilding Together Sacramento. You should be contacted within 4-8 weeks.

What will happen if I am approved?

The City's partner Rebuilding Together Sacramento (RTS) will notify that the applicant is accepted and will schedule a home visit. The RTS Installer will visit the home and conduct a home safety assessment. The Installer will discuss recommendations with the resident to determine what modifications they approve. Whenever possible, the work will be performed during the first visit, however, multiple visits may be necessary depending on the work involved.

Who is Rebuilding Together Sacramento?

Rebuilding Together Sacramento (RTS) is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization that has improved over 8,500 homes (approximately 300 per year) in the Sacramento area since 1991. Their mission is to preserve and revitalize homes and communities to ensure that those who are low-income and/or disabled live independently in comfort, safety and efficiency. RTS provides a variety of home improvement services that vary depending on the location and funding availability.

The program that the City selected with RTS is their Safe at Home: Safety Modifications program. The City named this program Safe at Home West Sacramento.
